Supporting Our Community

At the Whatcom Community Foundation, we are proud to support our community in many different ways. What we do best is to connect people who care with causes that matter to make our community an even better place. We work with both donors and our nonprofit community to ensure that they have the support they need to thrive.

  • Donor Spotlight

Glenn and Janice Butler have lived and raised their three children in Whatcom County since 1994. They opened a donor advised fund at the Whatcom Community Foundation as a way to support our common goal of encouraging philanthropy. They felt that it was an easy way to set up family giving in advance with “one check tax planning.” With the help of community members working with the Board of Directors, the Foundation distributes grants based on community needs, opportunities and, in the case of donor-advised and designated funds, donor goals. Thanks to a growing pool of funds, we are able to make grants to improve Whatcom County’s quality of life through literacy programs, violence prevention, environmental education, service learning projects, youth and family services, community arts programs and much more. Janice serves on the Mount Baker Theatre Board as well as the Campaign for the Arts Board while Glenn serves on the Whatcom Community Foundation board. Glenn says, “We have seen first hand the opportunities that funds maintained at the Foundation have encouraged and supported. Indeed, we are often supporters through both our time and our money on those opportunities.” Hats off to our philanthropy partners like Glenn and Janice for investing in our community.

We help donors find ways to support causes that are important to them by managing their funds and facilitating their giving, whether they are individuals, families or businesses.

We partner with local people and groups to help them realize their dreams – whether it’s a new library in Ferndale, the Campaign for the Arts or supporting the Depot Market in Bellingham.

We support our nonprofit community by managing their endowments, giving through our competitive grants round and providing technical assistance and counsel.

With the generosity of so many people in Whatcom County who care and want our community to be the best it can be, supporting our community is truly rewarding.
